Homogeneous material properties for PBF-EB components

Selective electron melting (PBF-EB) allows the defect-free manufacturing of complex components out of high performance materials today. Almost all worldwide applied process strategies base on sequential line melting of the material. The results are a preferential orientation during solidification and inhomogeneous material properties. However, many components rely on homogeneous properties to ensure their application purpose. Current research experiments reveal, that point melting strategies can improve the homogeneity.
The goal of this transfer project is to gain for the first time a deep base knowledge on the point-based beam-material-interaction during PBF-EB to develop suitable process strategies for a reproducible manufacturing of complex components with homogenous material properties. Therefore, single melting points as well as their interaction depending on the point melting pattern and process parameters, e.g. the beam return time, are investigated. In addition, a graph-based algorithm to generate the point melting sequence for defect free parts with homogeneous properties is developed and finally demonstrated on a complex component.
